Melbourne Cup Day 2012, 2013 in Australia
When is Melbourne Cup Day – November 6, 2012 – Observed on November 5, 2013
This is the day when Australia’s thoroughbred horses take to the racecourse which normally happens on the first Tuesday in November every year at the Victoria Racing Club’s annual four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Why is it celebrated?
The year 2012 will see the 152nd running with prize money of $10 million dollars for the taking. Melbourne Cup Day is also known as the peak of the Spring Racing Carnival. This is a very exciting time for all, when canapes, fashionable hats, champagne and other fashion wear makes its way to the stands.
The Melbourne cup is surely regarded as one of the most challenging horse races and regarded as one of the richest, where the race is being run over a distance of 3,200 meters known as a handicapped race. What this means, is that the better the horse is, the more weight it must carry.
