Hari Raya Haji in 2012 and 2013.
Hari Raya Haji – Commemorated on Oct 26, 2012 and Oct 15, 2013
This holiday marks the end of Muslims pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Hari Raya Haji is also known as the festival of Sacrifice and commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail his son in obedience to God. It is observed as a public holiday in Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.
Various celebrations are being held this day as many Muslims would be sacrificing camels, cows or sheep for the sake of religion. It is done in remembrance of the sacrifice by the Prophet Ibrahim when a ram appeared in the place of Ismail to be sacrificed instead. Male volunteers at various Mosques would perform the sacrificial slaughtering after the Hari Raya Haji prayers. The meat would be distributed to the community, where special attention is being given to the poor and the needy.
